I recently bought a 2001 Les Paul Special. It's got Burstbucker 3s, and boy are they noisy when I use distortion... lots of hiss when I'm not playing, and they easily feed back in the squeally, non-musical way.

So needless to say I'm in the market for some new pickups. I tend to play extreme metal, punk, and hardcore. I don't usually tune below D standard. I've had a Duncan Invader in an old SG and liked it. A friend recommended a DiMarzio Norton...

    any suggestions?

FWIW, I settled for a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and a Dimarzio D Activator in the neck.

if you look on fleabay you might actually find a nice set of stock pups from an epiphone les paul ( the chrome plated cover ones) I bought a set to have for a future DIY kit build. I think I got them for like 30.00 shipped, you may or may not find some that cheap but it is worth checking the old fleabay. ehty are actually the exact same pups that come on the lp standard plus top pro and I have no issues when running distortion with my LP.

I put Dimarzio 36th anniversary's in the last Les Paul I had. The best sound I ever got out of a LP for any type of music. But I know longer have that guitar, someone offer money I couldn't resist. And now I am a Telecaster player, I just like tele's.
